Something I noticed when my school got new monitors is that my own laptop shows everything well-balanced and more deep colors. The ones we have in our school (different types with different sizes) show everything very bright and vivid, somehow the deep colors got lost.
I calibrated my screen a few months ago (again) and none of the style options (movie, text, ect.) on our schools mostly big wide screen monitors can reach my laptop's colors. A reason could be the matte screen, but my shiny screen which collects dust every minute is just better. °a°

Really shiny and glossy screens makes your images look great, but when you start printing you notice how different everything looks !! :)

I can't say anything about printing because actually I don't think I have taken photos which are worth to be printed on quality (photo) paper and it's also far too expensive for a school student like me.
But I don't really need a calibrated monitor because I take my photos and they don't need to be edited. Editing is for those who do retouch, not for photographers. Being not good enough to take photos without Photoshop is lame and making your good photos extraordinary good-looking with Photoshop is just not right. You somehow keep being a liar to yourself if you do that.
Well, that's just my opinion.

I see photography as an art form, and as an artist, I don't really care if someone uses the darkroom, photoshop or camera settings only, as long as you're having fun and the final result expresses what you want !

Yeah, but I think photography should be one art form and not photography + retouch. Which added together is similar to photomanipulation, but everyone still sells it as only photos. I'm very for fairness, especially for all the artists with amazing skills which do not make their photos artificially perfect, are in hundreds of groups and put their photos in every poll they post on a daily routine. They are worth more attention than those who raise their pageviews with giving points away for a number of ten kiribans in row. I'm not pointing with my finger on any person, but I find this very unfair. To me it's a way of saying "I enjoy my art only if I get more attention/pageviews".

You should have fun, besides that the fact is that it sometimes expresses what you want and sometimes more than your skills are. If you're good at something, you can be proud of your skills.
Editing photos and enjoying them more (than the original good photo) sometimes seems to me like: "Hey, I enjoy sports. But with doping I can be even better." Only that doping is not allowed - because it's unfair.
Just saying.

I really noticed a difference between my laptop and pc...I was totally unaware that the difference existed! Must investigate some monitor calibration :)
